The plaster's coating or surface will wear over time and need to be resurfaced. Your pool might need to be resurfaced every ten to 20 years, depending on where it is located. First, cracks and spalling must first be repaired. Then, the whole pool shell must then be prepared. Preparation is a process that removes plaster from the surface and prepares it for new plaster layers. Preparation can be done using sandblasting, chipping and chemical surface etching.

Concrete shells are used to make in-ground swimming pools. They have been coated with a Portland cement based material called "plaster" which seals and protects the shell. Many plasters are coated with epoxy or paint. The plaster can also act as a substrate for tiles.

Concrete pools are plastered at the time of construction in the United States. Different pool coatings can be used in different areas of the United States when the original plaster becomes damaged or stained from years of acid cleaning and poor water chemistry. The pool coatings are then applied over the plaster. The plaster must be in good condition. If it has spalled from the concrete shell below, it will need to be repaired.
